SJD: Songs From a Dictaphone |
SJD has been far from idle since the release of Southern Lights, co-producing Don McGlashan’s Warm Hand album, and also contributing its standout song, I Will Not Let You Down (originally written during the Southern Lights sessions) amongst many other musical endeavours.Where Southern Lights was all micro-tones and dark shades there is a more colourful side to SJD’s oeuvre on display here with danceable delicacies and generous synthesizer washes, complimenting the much loved moody moments and ballads. Representing the latter Forty Flights Up, Mary Anne, Two Bodies and Lucifer are amongst the most accomplished songs he has yet written. Bad Karma In Yokahama and Beautiful Haze have already dished out the damage on single release with their accompanying videos, while songs like Just Say No To The Disco Inferno, I Am The Radio and third single I Wrote This Song For You carve out new exciting uptempo territory. There are synthpop shades of Sean’s 80’s musical background, sitting alongside Dylan-esque Biblical based mutterings, hypnotic motoric shufflers, drop dead gorgeous ballads and plenty to please old fans and initiate new ones. Don’t be fooled by the humble title Songs From A Dictaphone will be one of THE albums of 2007.
